Moss Of Aura - Still Parade

I've been sitting on this Moss Of Aura post for a while due to troubles uploading the songs. I'm glad I had those troubles though because it gave me time to deepen my appreciation of just how good these songs really are. For some reason when I thought of how to describe MOA's music I keep wanting to use Berlin as a reference point. Remember that 'Top Gun' song? Even if it wasn't your thing, those deep synths had a way of getting under your skin. It almost felt too dark of a song for 'Top Gun'. MOA combines a deep synth sound with tinges of balearic. It's very direct, yet somehow nuanced at the same time. All in all, it's just really mesmerizing stuff and a perfect transition out of summer and into fall.

Gold Panda presents Lucky Shiner

Gold Panda has released some of my favourite music (originals and remixes) over the past year and a half, and I'm pretty damn excited about this debut album of his. I have streamed the whole thing a number of times and I'm happy to see the dude has hit one out of the park. Some of these artists that come out and release a few killer singles make me nervous when it comes time for the (drum-roll-please....scratch that: ominous-timpani roll please) dreaded debut album. GP had a palette I was worried would be a little limiting when it came to trying to sustain listener interest for 40 or 60 minutes. However, here he has expanded that palette into a few different directions, some obvious, some not-so-obvious, that have made this a great listening experience. Really, this could be one of the best albums of the year and I'm happy to see a guy who showed so much promise deliver the goods. I'd hit repeat on this one a few times.

Andrew Hargreaves - Confusion in Consequence

Andrew Hargreaves just released his solo album for his own Lacies imprint last week and I have yet to receive it (it's making it's way across oceans as we speak, I presume). However, this song today is featured on that release (in some form), and well this has to be one of the best songs I've heard all year. Also featured on the song is Danny Norbury who released a spectacular album on Lacies himself last year. Confusion of Consequence is one of those songs it's hard to ignore. It's almost confrontational in it's beauty and absolutely demands an emotional response from the listener. The world of electronic music seems to have a knack for producing these sorts of songs - but they are still few and far between.

Museum of Bella Artes - Watch the Glow

Museum Of Bella Artes released one of my favourite songs of 2009 with their cover of Who Do You Love? and now they have Watch the Glow, a totally infectious pop gem. This is a pretty different sound from that first release, drawing far more from a somewhat balearic palette. But considering this is only their second song ever (!) to get a proper release it adds a new layer to a band that shows it has more tricks up it's sleeve that some may have guessed. This is one to put on repeat. Seriously hooky stuff.

Tokimonsta vs. Blue Daisy

One of my favourite musical renegades of the past year has been a busy man of late. Blue Daisy dropped this collaboration with Tokimonsta back in August for Team Acre and then dropped his new 2x12" for Black Acre earlier this month. This track comes from the Tokimonsta record and it features Daisy dropping his usual deep beats combined with low end digital haze to create the sonic boom that is the bass. Really, this guy is one of the best out there right now. He sort of fits with the whole dubstep thing in some ways but is a little to the left of that whole scene. But then again that may be what makes him outlast his peers in the long run.

Houses -- Soak It Up

Houses' song Endless Spring was one of the musical highlights of my summer and they are finally gearing up to release their debut via Lefse on Oct. 12. Soak It Up is another sun-soaked gem that begs you to let it soak into your pores. More importantly it serves as further indication that Houses may have a killer album ready to drop on the world.

Snailhouse -- Salvation Army (in four)

Snailhouse have a new 'name your price' EP out via Bandcamp. Mike Feuerstack, the singer-songwriter for Snailhouse, is perhaps my favourite Canadian singer-songwriter. He's released a number of great albums/EPs as Snailhouse, as well as two of the most important albums I can think of with his band The Wooden Stars (Mardi Gras and The Moon). For some of you this may serve as an introduction to the man's work (he also plays in Belle Orchestre!) and I can't suggest enough that you look further ...much further into this guy's back-catalogue. This material from the EP is really strong and this is just his odds n' sods. Seriously: fans of Bon Iver/Iron & Wine/Sufjan Stevens/ Owen take note.
